A Tzu Chi Faith Corps member (certified Tzu Chi volunteer) asked Master Cheng Yen, "There is a saying that people without desire are firm and not easily shaken. But why do conflicts arising from differences still happen among a group of people who are selflessly dedicated to a good cause?
The Master answered:
The “firmness” in this context does not mean doing things with a strong attitude. Instead, it means to be firm in principles while upholding a flexible and gentle attitude when dealing with others.
We should simplify everything and not think too much. The tension that exists in the current chaotic society is caused by trivial matters that are made complicated. You have to remain calm when handling matters and treat everyone equally. Don’t take things too seriously in interpersonal matters because by being unwisely persistent about it, you might end up brooding over things and making things more complicated.
