Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “What does ‘Jing Si’ mean?”

The Master answered:

To elevate our character, our mind must dwell in a state of calmness and stillness. “Jing” refers to an unwavering state of mind that is free of chaos. It is a very silent and still state. “Si” means “think” or “contemplate“. Hence, “Jing Si” is to ponder about matters with a very calm and still mind. Any ideas or views that arise from such a state of mind are the purest and clearest thoughts of human nature. Such thoughts are very firm and full of wisdom. If we can practise “Jing Si” or “silent contemplation” in our everyday life, we will naturally avoid doing wrong or committing evil acts.
