Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “How to purify people’s minds?”
The Master answered:
In order to purify the minds of people, it is important to enter the community to serve others.
Life is full of situations that leave people helpless, such as suffering from illnesses, injuries (due to accidents), or poverty. Since these people are already undergoing such suffering, we should care for their emotional wellbeing by supporting them as they go through the difficult stage of their life. When someone is about to reach the end of life, we can guide them to open up their hearts and accept their passing with ease. This is also what we need to work hard to do.
Through our actions of love, people will be able to see that those who give their love to others are the happiest in the world. Then, we can guide people to change their perspective, and those who are full of complaints and resentment about life can become individuals who actively do good and help others.
In fact, there are many kind-hearted people in our society, but we must combine the loving hearts of people, for only then can we render effective (help to those in need). Hence, we should just do what is right. Besides doing the good work ourselves, we should also encourage and guide others to join in the effort. Only then can we truly bring purity to people’s minds.
