A visitor asked, “Buddha has taught us to let go of attachments in order not to give rise to mental afflictions. Master Cheng Yen has so many missions to complete and many challenges along the way. How do you remain persistent in Tzu Chi’s missions without getting over attached?
The Master answered:
Perseverance and attachment are different. Being attached is to pursue something according to one’s judgement blindly. Perseverance is persisting in fulfilling a duty with a clear mind.
There are always different opinions from others when we choose to do something. However, we must persevere if it is something that ought to be done. We would be stubborn if we insist on doing something which is not right, disregarding other people’s opinions.
