Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “I have read this saying, ‘There is no one I do not love, no one I do not trust, and no one I cannot forgive’. How can we achieve that? Is it difficult to do that?”
The Master answered:
(It is actually very simple.) We should just bear a grateful heart and give of ourselves without seeking anything in return. And when we see those who have allowed us to serve and help them, we must be grateful to all of them.
This is why I always say that we should not be afraid of being “polished” by others. A stone will shine after it has been polished. The people who “polish others” (make life difficult for others) are having an even tougher time, because they will be drained of their energy, but those who have been “polished” will shine.
Therefore, we do not really have any enemies in life, nor are there any rights and wrongs in life. It is very difficult to distinguish what is right or wrong sometimes, as it is all a matter of perspective. This is a blind spot in life. Since it is a blind spot, what is there to bicker about? If you are not calculative and fussy, you will not hate anyone. And if there is nobody you hate, it means that everyone is lovable; so there is no one you do not love. If so, there will certainly not be anyone you cannot trust.
But we must truly play our roles well and do not deceive others and ourselves. We must be selfless and also believe that others are just like us. Everyone has love in their hearts. If you have such self-confidence and selflessness, you will be able to trust that others, too, have love in their hearts. So, what is there that cannot be forgiven? And there is no one that we cannot trust. With just a change in our mindset, we will realise how peaceful and lovely the world is.
