Mindfulness is knowing how to make use of time and be able to seize the moment.

Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “I am easily distracted. When I work on a task, I often worry about the next task. What can I do to achieve mindfulness?”

The Master answered:

Mindfulness is knowing how to make use of time and be able to seize the moment. Focus on what you do with a broad-minded attitude. Like the legendary giant bird, the Garuda, it waited attentively, when the wind came, it soared into the sky in full power. Therefore, mindfulness comes naturally, not deliberately.

The person asked further, “Is it not contradicting to say that mindfulness is free of hindrance and attachment while being mindful requires one to go all out to achieve concentration?”

The Master answered:

One does not use the mind when one is mindful. For instance, do you pay attention deliberately when you walk or eat? One walks and eats effortlessly; thus, mindfulness does not need to be deliberate.
