Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, "How do we understand ourselves?"
The Master answered:
We understand ourselves when we know that we are hungry, go to sleep when it is time for bed, and get ready for work after waking up in the morning. We should not brood over things and complicate our thoughts.
Actually, what is more important is how we understand others. For example, we should reflect on ourselves and think about whether we are only choosing to do the tasks we like and delegate the tasks that we dislike to others.
When you are considerate towards others, you will really understand yourself at this moment—you will know that you are an understanding person. If you keep seeing the negative side of others, you will also understand yourself—you will know that you are a narrow-minded person.
