Someone asked Master Cheng Yen, “How do we know a person and make good use of the person’s ability?”
The Master answered:
Often, ordinary folks have blind spots when it comes to knowing and assigning suitable duties to the right person. The first blind spot is a lack of discernment to identify the talents around them. The second blind spot is knowing a person’s capability but not using the person’s skill. Finally, and the worst of all, is to use someone without entrusting responsibility to that person.
Knowing people’s abilities and assigning suitable duties to them is very helpful to an organisation. It is auspicious to have good people performing good deeds. When many promising talents work together in an organisation, they can accomplish many things that benefit the community. People who suppress others out of fear are ignorant and unwise. Those who fear others being more capable will never fare better than others. Only when talents are put in the correct position to carry out the right duties can they truly help in critical situations.
