Someone asked, “How do lay Buddhists (Buddhists who cultivate at home) uphold the precepts to guard against harmful consequences created by speech, body and mind? I can’t rely on my family and friends to support me in my cultivation, so how should I uphold the precepts?

The Master answered:

People who eat will naturally feel full. When you uphold the precepts in order to attain enlightenment, you will naturally reap the fruits of your labour. Therefore, when you hear or see other people’s negative words and deeds, you must be vigilant and don’t speak of them. However, when you see other people doing kind deeds, you must rejoice and even praise them sincerely so that you can promote and bring together the positive energy of love to the people around you.
