A visitor came to Master Cheng Yen and ranted about how things were not going well in his career and marriage. The visitor thought that he had done quite a lot of good deeds and wondered if he had encountered some sort of bad luck.
The Master responded:
Your kind acts are all “external” and do not stem from your inner heart. Even though you are doing good deeds, you have not really put in the effort to cultivate your heart and start with purifying your mind. Hence, you have not changed the way you treat people and handle things. As you are merely doing good “externally”, you have yet to change your life from within. You need to change your life from within in order to (reap blessings).
True Love comes from the heart, so does genuine kindness.
