Someone asked, “I have done a lot of good deeds, I should be considered a good person, but why don’t I have good affinities and good relationships with others?”
The Master answered:
A person who does good is not necessarily a good person. Buddha said that one of the Ten Armies of Mara (Ten Evil Forces) is called the "Good Demon Root”. This kind of person is always very high profile about his good deeds, fearing that others do not know about his merits. While the other “Good Demon Root” works differently, this type of person quietly carries out their good deeds. However, they are always very calculative towards those who do much less than them. The right attitude should be just happily do what is within our means and do it because we think we should. The issue of whether our kind acts are known or not known by others is unimportant. Just stay happy and not be bothered about how much or how little we have done. By behaving so, you will naturally forge good interpersonal relationships with others.
