A Box of Medicine Reveals Sri Lanka’s Rural Healthcare Challenges
A box of medicine does more than treat an illness. For villagers in Sri Lanka’s Hambantota District, it is also a long-awaited gift of hope. Although public healthcare is free, many elderly and frail villagers in rural farming communities struggle to travel for medical care. Limited manpower and medicine supplies at public hospitals also make access to healthcare even more challenging. Through its free clinic, Tzu Chi hopes to ease these difficulties by bringing healthcare closer to the community and helping local residents receive the care and medication they need.
