Selfless Heroes Behind the Scenes of the Buddha Day Celebration

The Buddha Day Celebration held at Bukit Gombak Stadium ended successfully, thanks to the selfless contributions of a group of volunteers behind-the-scenes. Some of them took on different roles at the event, while some came to serve onsite despite feeling unwell. Everyone came with the purest intention to make this event a great success.

After the Buddha Day Celebration ended, Tan Keng Hock changes his outfit and “transforms” into a member of the logistics team. He tirelessly helps with moving things onsite and has got himself a nickname, “Iron Man”.

I fell down before when I was young and got injured when serving the army. I also broke 4 bones in my legs and there are two plates inserted in them. But I’m grateful to contribute to the Buddha Day Celebration. Many people came to join the event to learn more about the Dharma and I really feel very happy.

Dharma Master Cheng Yen tells us to just do what is right and not to think too much. Now, I’m seizing the opportunity to do what needs to be done.

The whole circuit is wrong. I’ll get two power plugs for you guys.

Another volunteer who seizes the opportunity to contribute is Koh Thong Eng. Koh is in charge of setting up the power supply during Tzu Chi events. But due to osteoarthritis, the friction between the bones causes him great pain. Despite walking with a limp, he still came to help prepare for the event on this day.

The others are not familiar with the work. Setting up power supply is no child’s play. A wrong connection may lead to explosion. So no matter how in pain I am, I have to come and take a look.

Gek Yong Hou often works together with Koh. Gek, who used to just be a team member, bravely served as a team leader this year in order to lessen Koh’s workload.

So I feel relieved as well. It is different when Koh is around. I can sense that he feels the pain in his knee, so we just do our best to make this ceremony a success. This is what I hope to see.

Seizing the opportunity to make this major event a success is the hope of all volunteers.
