According to tradition, during the time of the Buddha, disciples would begin their annual three-month retreat on the sixteenth day of the fourth lunar month, concluding it on the fifteenth day of July. This period is crucial for spiritual growth, symbolizing auspiciousness and joy for the Buddha and his followers.
The "Ullambana" or "Ghost Festival" in July originates from the story of Maudgalyayana rescuing his mother, emphasizing the importance of filial piety. True "Ullambana" aims to alleviate the suffering of beings, promoting vegetarianism and compassion towards all life forms.
